साधनम्
The word sadhana (Sanskrit) basically means "getting it done,"
and refers to the spiritual activity of the sadhaka or sadhu ("do-er").
The fun thing about this word is that it describes people and processes that
actually do nearly nothing, have almost no 'product' in an economic sense.
I've long wanted to see the word sadhana taken up in English, since it
recognizes and dignifies the process of untangling
the action-knots (uh, karmas) of human misery.
A sadhu performs sadhana with techniques that --at their best--
are relaxed to the point of supine. A good sadhana can snip
through the karmic macrame with nothing more tangible
than a little song and a hint of saffron.
A really good one even less.
